Environmental Policy
CARING FOR OUR ENVIRONMENT
The Loft Shop Ltd recognises that its products and services have an effect
on the environment and is committed to reducing any such impact to a minimum
by following a detailed policy and action plan.
In this respect our policy is to:
- Liaise with suppliers and customers to promote the best possible environmental practice in the selection, use and ultimate reclamation of the products and materials that pass through the company's hands.
- Continue to develop the company's understanding of the environmental issues associated with the business.
- Reduce the environmental impacts of Loft Shop products (and any packaging used) in their design, manufacture, distribution, use and reuse.
- Reduce waste to a minimum, to ensure its safe disposal and to recycle materials where appropriate.
- Reduce the consumption of energy and to use it wisely.
- Reduce the consumption of raw materials wherever possible.
- Reduce or avoid where possible the pollution of land, air and water.
- Comply with, or exceed, relevant legal requirements.
- Encourage the development of good environmental practice by promoting this policy to staff, customers and suppliers and keeping them informed of progress in environmental performance.
- Record the progress made in the development and implementation of this policy.
- Implement this policy by achieving the objectives in the action plan by the stated target dates.
- Have systems in place regularly to review progress against the above objectives and adjust targets and actions in the light of such reviews.
Many of the company's products are manufactured from renewable sources (timber in particular) and the company has a policy (wherever possible) to purchase raw materials from well managed sources.
Leading towards the company's main target that all timber contained in Loft Shop products will come from sources independently certified by an accredited certifier we continue to press suppliers for detailed information on the sources of the timber in Loft Shop products. In accordance with this policy The Loft Shop Ltd now offers all its timber roof windows and skylights in Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) timber. This means that under the strict rules of the FSC the product has been traced from the FSC certified forest to the customer. It has its own 'chain of custody' code number to prove that it has been certified by an association dedicated to promoting 'environmentally responsible, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the worlds forests'
As a supplier of a wide range of timber based products The Loft Shop Ltd is often asked by its customers - architects, builders and the public - about its policy towards the environment and how timber used in Loft Shop products is sourced.
In particular these questions are asked about the Western Red Cedar range of products from British Columbia (Colt Preceda Shingles and Shakes, Cedalap Sidewall Cladding and Cedawalk Decking). As a result it was decided to develop a document based upon the simple 'Question and Answer' formula to provide information on commonly asked questions.
The company's management team is dedicated to the continual improvement of its environmental performance and aim to be the environmental leader in the field.
Copies of our policy, targets and action plan as well as 'Questions and Answers on British Columbian Forest Practices' are available on request.
